Did you know that central heating represents almost one half of energy consumption in Spanish homes during the coldest months? How much do you pay for electricity in winter? Some small changes to your day-to-day routine can make a big difference at the end of the month, so why not acquire some habits than can make your home more energy-efficient, allowing you greater savings without cutting back on comfort?
It is best to keep your home at a moderate temperature, between 19º and 21º, and for this to be constant, without putting the temperature up too high and then having to turn it down or off altogether a short time later. If you do this, you will generate an unnecessary cost.
Windows are responsible for almost 40% of heat loss from people’s homes, and so we recommend checking all joins and possible draught gaps, or installing double glazing, which not only prevents heat from escaping, but also stops cold coming in from outside. With doors, the ideal solution is to fit small foam strips along the frames.
Meanwhile, you can have a look at the advantages of a ventilated façade on buildings, which is another form of thermal insulation that allows major energy savings in the home.
Letting the sun shine into your home is a simple step that will allow the house to accumulate heat during the day, so pull up the blinds and open the curtains! When it gets dark, do the opposite to insulate the house from the outside as much as possible.
If your central-heating system uses gas radiators, which are based on the entry of hot water in the pipes, we recommend ‘bleeding’ them at least once a year before winter arrives: this allows accumulated air to escape so that you do not have to turn up the power of your central heating in order to reach the desired temperature.
Have you thought about changing your domestic appliances?
Even though this means an initial economic outlay, it will become a saving over the medium and long term. You must look at the energy-efficiency label and make sure that they always have the highest rating, from A at the top to G at the bottom. Did you know that you can save up to 50% on electricity and an average of €100 a year?
As we have often said in the past, don’t accept the first offer or tariff that is proposed: evaluate the different options available on the market, and above all, choose the one that best suits your needs in accordance with the characteristics of your home and the energy you consume.
By putting this advice into practice you will ease the pressure on your pocket, while also contributing to saving the environment. Why not start now?
